Director of Nursery School


The Church of St. James the Less is seeking an experienced and energetic educator to lead our Nursery School in its long standing commitment to young children and their families.  The director plays an integral role in developing curriculum and in fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.  The director is a highly visible and accessible leader who is pro-actively available to parents and students on school days and who is responsible for administration, personnel, finance and fostering a healthy church/school relationship.

School Information:

The school is 41 years old (founded 1967).  We are God-centered and honoring of all faith traditions, actively seeking diversity and exposure to the variety of traditions and cultures available within the community.

We provide a nurturing school experience for 50 children and we believe that play is the work of children.  Kindergarten readiness is a focus throughout the program and we encourage discovery, creativity, self-awareness and social interaction in an atmosphere of trust, warmth, order and respect.

Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum 5 years classroom experience.
  • A person of genuine warmth and integrity who enjoys young children and is comfortable interacting with a variety of constituents.
  • Experienced leader able to inspire others and to implement change and continuous improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, working collaboratively with parents, staff and board members.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in fundraising and recruiting volunteers.
  • A willingness to work within and to support the mission/vision of the whole church.

Responsibilities:

  1. Cultivate a nurturing academic environment, incorporating multi-faith and multi-cultural experiences.
  2. Stay abreast of current trends and developments in the field of early childhood.
  3. Stay informed of competition within the community and foster relationships with neighboring school directors.
  4. Foster growth of the school by developing expanded school programs that will meet community needs.
  5. Continue to develop, oversee and grow the summer program offered by the school.
  6. Guide staff, via regular staff meetings and one-on-one, to understand and implement the mission/vision of the school.
  7. Recruit and retain outstanding teachers who are committed to professional development.
  8. Set annual operating budget and implement strong financial controls.
  9. Evaluate staff annually and make salary recommendations.
  10. Establish and work with a Parent Committee and work with this Committee in creating fundraising, social and other activities that will benefit the school and its students.
  11. Establish and maintain solid working relationships with the Associate for Christian Education, the Rector, Vestry, School Board and church staff.

Compensation:

St. James the Less provides compensation commensurate with other preschools in the Scarsdale area.  We offer a competitive package, including family health benefit coverage, pension and vacations.  Determination of salary level will recognize candidate's academic degrees, training and experience.
